How to Setup a Linksys Router without CD

It’s pretty simple to setup a Linksys router without the installation disk and customize network settings, change the default password, setup firewall or parental controls to keep kids safe online, and do lots more. This kind of setup rocks when you don’t have the installation disk. Check the steps given below and setup your Linksys router without the help of the installation disk.

Step 1: Prepare your Linksys router

Connect your Linksys router to your computer and to the DSL/cable modem using the Ethernet cable(s) that came with it. Plug your router into the power outlet also and turn it on. Wait for the router to boot up and complete the power cycle. If properly connected, you should see the LED lights turned on the modem. If you need help with physical setup, refer to the Linksys router setup manual. Also make sure that you have an active, working Internet connection. To make sure that the Internet is working, browse a website or two.

Step 2: Collect all the information

To be able to setup and use your Linksys router, you will need the default username and password (check the Linksys router setup manual) to log on to it. If needed, keep the password and username handy for your Internet connection also. Once you have the required information, move onto the next step.

Step 3: Access Linksys’ Web Interface

Open your web browser and type 192.168.1.1 and hit the Enter key to proceed. If by any chance, the page is drawn blank, try this number 192.168.2.1. On the Connect to dialog box, type the username, which is “admin” in most of the router brands and the password field is usually left blank. However, you do refer to your router manual for this default information. Once you have entered the username, click OK. You should be now logged on to the web interface of your router.

Step 4: Customize your router

Now that you are logged on to your Linksys router, customize your settings. You can now setup a wireless network viz. SSID to connect, browse, and stream wirelessly, configure an access point, setup a PPPoE connection, or enable firewall etc. For e.g. if you want to setup a wireless network, click the Wireless tab and then proceed with the settings.
