How to Setup a Belkin Router with Windows 8

Windows 8 integrates Windows Connect Now, a technology which lets you automatically set up your Belkin router by pushing the network settings. Windows Connect Now has been there in Windows 7 and Vista SP2 also and its extension to Windows 8 makes it possible for a router user like you to take its advantage and setup and configure your wireless network, customize password, and do a lot more. Other than Windows Connect Now, you can set up your Belkin router the old ways viz. the installation media and web interface. Here are discussed all the options to setup a Belkin router in Windows 8. Check them below here.

Using Windows Connect Now

Step 1

Plug your Belkin router into the power outlet and turn it on. Wait while the router boots up. Since you are using Windows Connect Now, you need not connect the router to computer or the DSL/Cable modem using the Ethernet cable. Push “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” button on your Belkin device to let Windows Connect Now detect it and find network settings for it. If your Belkin router shows “Compatible with Windows” or the Windows logo, it means you can connect using Windows Connect Now. If you don’t see any of this on your Belkin device, you can’t connect via Windows Connect Now (WCN).

Step 2

Once you see the WCN capability on your router, click the Network icon in the system tray of your Windows 8 computer and a list of all the available networks will appear up. Locate the default Belkin router network, click it and then click Connect. If your Belkin router network is password protected, it would prompt you for a wireless security key. Refer to your Belkin router setup manual for the default network name and the key and get going. Follow rest of the instructions to set it as your home network and/or customize your settings.

Using Belkin Router Setup Disk

Step 1

Load the Belkin installation disk into the optical drive of your Windows 8 computer and wait for it to auto-play. When prompted, start the installation and connect your Belkin router physically to your computer and the DSL/cable modem using the Ethernet cable. Follow the on-screen prompts and set up and configure your router.

Using Belkin Router Web Interface

Step 1

You don’t need the installation disk or anything else to setup your Belkin device this way. Simply physically connect (using the Ethernet cable) your router to your computer and the DSL/cable modem. When properly connected, open your Internet browser and type in the address bar. Hit Enter to proceed. Click Login and then type your default password in the Password field. Click Login after entering the password and you will now be logged on to your Belkin router. From here, you can begin to set up your wireless network (SSID), setup a new router password, enable a firewall, setup parental controls, and do other miscellaneous things.

How to Block Unwanted Websites on a Belkin Router

If you are an IT administrator, a parent or an individual user, you know how difficult it is to protect your wireless network from spam, adult or other unwanted websites which may instantly distribute spam on your computer and compromise your information. As more concerned you are about your security, kids or employees (or other users of your computer) are as careless about online safety and the consequences upon a breach. Since it’s not possible for you to keep a constant eye on what website is being accessed on the Internet and what’s not, the best thing you can do is to block unwanted websites. With a Belkin router, it is simple to block unwanted websites and protect your network from hackers and bandwidth thieves.

Depending on your Belkin router’s model, it should have a parental control feature enabling which will help you give control on the incoming/outgoing website content. If your router doesn’t have a parental control feature, check if it has any such feature to block websites. You can refer to your Belkin router setup manual for more information on the same or visit the Belkin website for that matter.
Step 1
Some new Belkin router models come pre-integrated with Norton-powered website filters which help you block malicious, adult and other unwanted websites easily. Check if your router came installed with the website filters feature so that you can enable it. Follow the steps given below and enable the desired website filter.
Step 2
Open your web browser and type “” in the address bar (without quotes) and hit Enter. The Login screen should come up. click the Login button and enter the desired password in the Password field. The field is left blank by default unless you have set up a custom password. Click the Submit button to log in. In the left hand side menu, click Website Filters under Parental Controls. On the Website Filers screen, you will see 4 filtering options viz. Block Malicious, Adult and other non-family friendly sites, Block malicious and adult sites, Block malicious sites, and No Filters (null). All these four options are self-explanatory, choose one which does the needful for you.
Step 3
Once you have selected the desired filter, click the Apply Changes button to save your changes. The website filter is now enabled. However to make the filter effective, you will need to do one more thing. First of all exit the router interface and then do this. Clear the browsing history, cookies, and temporary cache (Temp folder) on your computer to make the website filter work.
Step 4
If your Belkin device is old and is not powered with Norton website filters, look for the Parental Controls feature. Click it from the left hand side menu and login with your username and password if prompted. The Parental Controls feature might be included as a subscription-based service to your router. So check with your Belkin router support if it needs to be subscribed first in order to be used.
Step 5
Once logged in to Parental Controls, click Modify> Overrides. Type the website name (URL address, for e.g. or the desired keyword which you want to block in the desired field and select the Always blocked button. If you want to block more websites, separate them with commas. When done, click Apply Changes to make it effective. Your network should then not receive any spam, adult, malicious content from the blocked websites. You can now stay tension free always and enjoy and let others enjoy Internet access without being worried.

One thing I would like to remind you about here is that a firewall (specifically router’s) when enabled blocks ports for certain websites and content streaming, particularly when you are using XBOX 360 which becomes unable to communicate with XBOX LIVE. To be able to get around this problem, you will have to open certain ports in your router. Enabling ports is also known as port forwarding, a popular technique to allow communication and streaming
These port numbers include Port 88 (UDP), 3074 (UDP & TCP), 53 (UDP & TCP), and 80 (TCP). To enable all these ports, you will have to log in to your Belkin router’s web-based setup utility (check the first step) and navigate to Firewall> Virtual Servers. On the next screen, you can fill in the desired port numbers here.

Do check the Enable box and type a description in the Description box (for e.g. game). Select port type viz. UDP or TCP or both from the drop-down menu. Enter IP address and the Private Port if desired and click the Apply Changes button. That’s it and the ports in your router will be enabled.

How to Configure MAC Access Control on a Belkin Router

If you are using a Belkin wireless router, chances are that while going through Belkin router support documentation you might have checked about MAC Access Control List. Not many users know about MAC Access Control feature in their Belkin devices. Let me tell you something about it. MAC Access Control List is one among the three wireless security features that Belkin routers have. The other two are WEP and WPA-PSK. I am sure most of the users must have heard about these two security types.
In fact these are the most widely used encryption types when configuring wireless networks. On the other hand, MAC Access Control List is rarely used by anyone when configuring wireless security. MAC (Media Access Control) Access Control List is a type of protocol that helps you set up grant or deny access to other wireless devices that try to connect to your wireless network. If you don’t know the MAC address of the device you want to block or allow, you won’t be able to set up MAC encryption for it.
  • For example, you can add your computer(s) or devices on your network to the list of safe networks. To find out your devices’ MAC address, open Command Prompt from the Start menu> All Programs> Accessories and then do this.
  • Type ‘ipconfig /all’ and hit Enter. Note down the number in the format XX:XX:XX:XX beside Physical Address under a specific device. You may see many physical addresses listed there for different devices. You will have to note down the right physical address of the device you wish to add to or block from your network.
  • When done, exit the Command Prompt window. Connect your computer directly to your Belkin router using the Ethernet cable. You can do so only by disconnecting the modem, the middleman between your computer and the router.
  • Connect one end of the cable into the Ethernet port of your computer and run its other end into the LAN port of Belkin router. When connected, check the light’s status on the router to make sure that your router and computer are connected properly.
  • Open your web browser. Type ‘’, the router’s IP address in the address bar and hit Enter. When prompted, enter your router password and click Submit. You can use the default password if you never set up a custom one. You can also refer to your Belkin router support documents to check the default login details.
  • Once logged in, you will see the Belkin Router Setup screen. Click MAC Address Control under the Wireless menu in the left hand side. If prompted, enter your router password again.
  • Now if you want to allow a device to be able to connect to your network, click Allow. If you want to prevent a device from connecting to your network, click Deny.
  • Click inside the given box and then enter the MAC address of the desired device. You will have to enter MAC address only in this specified format ‘00:17:XX:XX:XX:XX’. Continue this step if you wish to add or block more wireless devices.
  • When done, click Apply Changes and exit the router’s interface. That’s it and all your worries about your wireless network’s safety will be gone.
